本成果以酵母细胞自絮凝形成毫米级松散颗粒作为细胞固定化方法，在成功选育酒精发酵性能优良且具有自絮凝特征酵母工程菌株的基础上，系统提出了利用（酵母）细胞自絮凝形成颗粒作为细胞固定化方法的无载体固定化细胞技术的新概念，开发了基于自絮凝颗粒细胞均匀悬浮原理的悬浮床生物反应器。在此基础上：建立了形状不规则、大小不均一、非刚性自絮凝颗粒酵母在线表征方法，研究了自絮凝颗粒酵母生长和酒精生成的本征和表观动力学，优化了酒精连续发酵工艺过程；先后在1000mL、500L和10m3规模悬浮床生物反应器中，系统研究了悬浮床生物反应器的流体力学，解决了反应器的工程放大问题；建立了单级悬浮床生物反应器有效容积100m3、1000 m3多级串联、年产酒精20万吨级规模自絮凝颗粒酵母酒精连续发酵新技术产业化示范工程装置，并实现了稳定运行。
与国内现有带渣发酵工艺技术路线，特别是引进奥地利VOGELBUSCH的技术相比，达到相同发酵终点酒精浓度和残糖水平，所需的平均发酵时间缩短一倍以上，大型燃料酒精装置建设所需发酵罐总容积规模以相同比例减小，建设投资和运行费用均相应降低；同时，由于对原料进行前处理综合利用，对发酵副产酵母进行回收加工，发酵液酒精精馏后产生废糟液COD降低幅度达到60%以上，充分体现了资源合理利用、提高过程工艺技术水平、副产物深加工与污染物源头减废、清洁生产之间的关系。与国外清液发酵普遍采用碟片离心机分离酵母的工艺技术路线相比，大型离心机设备投资、运行能耗、维护费用等均可节省。
该技术在教育部组织的鉴定会上被评为国际先进技术，获教育部科学技术发明二等奖。
二、产品的应用范围：
自絮凝颗粒酵母酒精连续发酵新技术已经开始为国家规划发展的燃料酒精这一能源产业提供关键技术支撑，替代引进技术，其推广应用前景良好，经济效益和社会效益将十分显著。
与此同时，自絮凝颗粒酵母酒精连续发酵新技术还可以应用于现有酒精发酵行业的技术改造，在一定程度上解决这一传统产业面临的原料资源利用不合理和废糟液治理设备投资大、运行能耗高的突出问题，提升酒精发酵这一传统产业的工艺技术水平，降低生产成本，促进清洁生产。
三、规模与投资：
按年产万吨燃料乙醇计算，成本投资约为2.5－3.0亿。
四、市场与效益：
乙醇既是一种化工基本原料，又是一种新能源。
尽管目前已有着广泛的用途，但仍是传统观念的市场范围。未来乙醇作为基础产业的市场方向将主要体现在三个方面：
一是车用燃料，主要是乙醇汽油和乙醇柴油。这就是我们传统所说的燃料乙醇市场，也是近期的（10年内）容量相对于以后较小的市场（在我国约1000万吨/年）。
二是作为燃料电池的燃料。在低温燃料电池诸如手机、笔记本电脑以及新一代燃料电池汽车等可移动电源领域具有非常广阔的应用前景，这是乙醇的中期市场（10-20年内）。乙醇目前已被确定为安全、方便、较为实用理想的燃料电池燃料。乙醇将拥有新型电池燃料30—40%的市场。三是乙醇将成为支撑现代以乙烯为原料的石化工业的基础原料。在未来二十年左右的时间内，乙醇将顺理成章地进入石化基础原料领域。在我国的市场容量至少也在2000万吨/年以上。无水乙醇现价7800元/吨，年产万吨乙醇的发酵厂可创利税约为2.0亿元。
五、提供技术的程度和合作方式：
提供全部成熟技术。一次性全部或分步转让，也可采用技术入股等多种合作形式。
